Very few technologies have come along and offered the kind of value to operations like server virtualization. And the clear leader in that space today is VMware. With over 90% of the Fortune 100 using their product, VMware is here to stay.

As both a VMware VIP Enterprise Partner and HP Elite Partner, Genilogix offers innovative products and services that bring virtualization together with automated functional and performance testing, test management, and performance monitoring. Genilogix also resells the full product lines from VMware and HP Software allowing us to put together complete virtualized testing solutions for our customers. Not only do we help organizations optimize their own virtual infrastructures and incorporate virtual test labs into QA, we practice what we preach. Genilogix's internal infrastructure runs on VMware using testing and monitoring tools from HP.

HP TestDirector for Quality Center pioneered the management of information related to the testing process. Today, Quality Center is the de facto standard in QA for managing requirements, tests, results, defects and the workflow that surrounds them. But with all the efficiencies gained by using it, the bottleneck of provisioning test machines, setting up applications under test (AUTs), and enabling access to widely distributed QA teams has remained.

VMware Lab Manager is the solution. Building on the industry-leading VMware Infrastructure, it provides a self-service portal for distributed teams to create, share and manage multi-tier dev/test environments. VMware Lab Manager delivers cost savings beyond traditional virtualization for IT Operations by removing time-consuming system provisioning tasks. Additionally, VMware Lab Manager provides functionality that was never before available such as the ability to capture a point in time snapshot of a test environment's memory and storage state as a URL that can be forwarded from QA to development.

The VMware Lab Manager Add-in for HP Quality Center provides an automation bridge between testing and deployment of test environments. QA staff now have the power to seamlessly invoke operations in VMware Lab Manager as part of a Test Set within HP Quality Center or from QuickTest Professional. Test Sets can now deploy variations of applications under test in a virtualized environment and direct other testing tools such as QuickTest Professional and WinRunner to run against them. When defects are encountered, the Add-in facilitates the creation of LiveLinks to capture the running state of the application when it failed. When the tests are finished running, the Add-in can undeploy the virtualized environment to save memory and processing resources.

As organizations consolidate servers and storage, the applications that depend on this infrastructure must be tested to ensure optimal configuration. To quote VMware, "problems that can't be measured, can't be repaired."

Enter HP and Genilogix's Performance Pack for VMware (datasheet). When mission-critical applications are virtualized, a number of configuration decisions are made that affect performance and availability. Using MonitorBridge for VMware in conjunction with HP's LoadRunner or Performance Center performance testing tools, Genilogix can extend visibility from performance problems inside of VM's to the VMware ESX Server as a whole by correlating esxtop statistics against end-user activity. And once the virtualized applications are moved into production, Business Availability Center and SiteScope can also use MonitorBridge for VMware.
